just to show the actual painting process I snapped a photo during the painting session. I've got my laptop on a stand very near the still life. Other fellow artists were setup at different angles around it (most of the other people use oil paints, I'm the oddball going digital)

Love your art!!! I have just started using painter 12 and yes it does crash a lot when I have multiple paintings up and many layers. However it's my first digital painting program so I have nothing to complain about because I have nothing to compare it to haha. Any advice for a digital painting noob??

Thank you! I made a video about how I paint that you might find useful (hopefully)...

If that is not enough I have a whole dvd on the subject of light and color you can find here (sorry it's not free)...

I have not upgraded to version 12 because of the very poor reviews and people saying it crashes a lot. I'm happy with 11 for now. Do you use 12?

I have tried the trial. Its good that they are incorporating 64 bit support into the program(although not much improvement in performance). And I guess there is an upgrade for the v12 to help the crashes. But, imho I have yet to deal with a non crash prone painter. But supposedly the backup system is better though. Photoshop seems to be best program in terms of stability and 64 bit use. You can't use many layers in painter (at least in windows on my machine) before it becomes unstable. But, The brush system is still my favorite. In 12, there are more options for the brushes. You can set stroke opacity and also give your brush a merge mode much like photoshop. To me this is an added benefit because the system still doesn't have a true traditional paint effect.(buildup goes to black which isn't right.) There is a cool watercolor and oil brush that bleeds pretty well. The "real wet oil" has an add turp blender that its cool in that it can produce that randomness that traditional painting has. But I don't think its worth the upgrade cost.

I still own painter 9.5. how is 11 compared to 9.5. Have you discovered a new brush or are you still sticking with the painter 9 brush?
