MarineScanner-process by jermilex MarineScanner-process by jermilex
since a few people asked. I tried to do this as a large animated gif (much easier to see than this super long image), but DA only allows for gif under 150x150 pixels . If anyone knows how to post a larger animated gif please let me know.

HERE's a link to a swf file to see it animated...
[link]

Again, my process is to sketch, block in colors, blend it, sketch in some more, blend, refine, blend, refine, blend, etc.

I start with an idea, then block in very rough color and keep refining more detail as I go. Here's a better look at my process on this one....

Not to sound commercial, but I made a DVD that talks about all my thoughts on color and light and how to apply it practically to a painting. Have a look.... [link]

Other than that my advice is practice practice practice. We each have a million bad drawings in us so we might as well get them out now so we can get to the good stuff. Do some painting of real world objects around you. It really wiil help you understand light and color so you can apply it to your own original creations.

Happy creating!

You use Painter? What do you use to blend with? Is it "add water" or "liq. smear" or other?

Sorry for the questions. If you use Photoshop, what method of blending in there?

Very curious, because I use smudge to blend in Photoshop and everyone thinks that's bad, but I think it mimics a dry brush in open canvas oil painting.

In Painter, I use Liq smear and add water, but I was just wondering what your methods are to perhaps help me discover better ways.

Thank you for a lovely walk through on this gorgeous scene.

Yes, I use Painter 9. I like the ArtistOils/wetOilyBrush and the ArtistOils/WetOilyPaletteKnife. I do not use the smudge tool in Photoshop as it just pushes pixels instead of blending colors naturally.... in my opinion. I hope this helps. Thanks again for the compliment. :)

Hello Jeremy
I was inspired by this visual tutorial and referenced it for [link] I’ve added it to the print program to see how that works with digital painting. Let me know if you prefer I didn't since I referenced your work. Thank you for the tutorial and inspiration! :)

No problem at all. Yes, a progam can be fantastic but until you find a good workflow it might not be useful. I hope you're able to get to where you are comfortable with it and painting everything you can imagine.

great! Yes, Painter can be overwhelming in the choices, but with any tool it's about finding a simple workflow that works for you. I like the artist oils.

Cheers!
