I have been meaning to do this for awhile... add some more visual painting tutorials. This is my process for painting, starting with broad strokes and refining smaller and smaller details until the final result.

I recorded a Painter script while I painted this and played it back to capture this movie, then converted it to flash for posting here. Sorry if it's a bit slow.

I use Corel Painter 11 and only 3 brushes.... ArtistOils/WetOilyBrush, Pencils/CoverPencil, and to blend an ArtistOils/WetOilyPaletteKnife

Your gallery is such an inspiration! I myself am but an amateur, but all manner of scapes are most certainly my weakest point. Looking at what magnificent images you create makes me want to learn, though.

How incredibly kind of you to post tutorials! It's always endlessly helpful when an amazing artist like yourself provides insight into his method.

If I ever attempt to tackle one and end up posting it on here, I'll be sure to give you credit for providing this resource. ^^

Maybe you could start with something like Blender, it's free and a good introduction to 3D animation... [link]

It's not an easy thing to learn, but it's a great place to start

Fantastic! That's the attitude that will help you succeed! Keep creating! I do not know of any tutorials specifically for Blender, but look on youtube and I'm sure there will be quite a bit. Also look at www.thegnomonworkshop.com for great general tutorials on every aspect of this industry

Sorry to burst into a conversation that is not mine, but I "heard" you guys talk :)
The studio that did the short called "Sintel" were using Blender and released a series of DVDs teaching all of the free apps they were using in the production. They got pretty much everything from concept to final 3d render.

I also have to say Mr. Vickery, your DVDs on light and color is the most informative and eye opening lecture I've seen on this subject. Many thanks!

This is wonderful. I've been looking for a good Painter tut, and this does the job perfectly. :) May I ask which brushes you used, though? I'm toying around with them right now and can't quite figure out which ones work best together.

I use a Pencil/CoverPencil, an ArtistOils/WetOilyBrush, and for blending I use an ArtistOils/WetOilyPaletteKnife. Hope this helps. You could also consider looking at Ryan Church's DVD with the Gnomon Workshop all about Painter. You can find it here... [link]

Did you look at reference when you do backgrounds? I find them very hard to do, inside a building or outside, this is just stunning~!

You have a pen tab don't you? I am trying really hard to get one right now. I hate working with a mouse. It feels weird to me.

Yes, working with a mouse is totally impossible. I have a Cintiq which is sheer bliss (like a tbalet but it's also the monitor and you draw directly on screen... expensive, but amazing)

You should at least look into a cheap tablet like this one....
Wacom BambooI actually use one exactly like this with my laptop sometimes and it works perfectly fine for detailed painting. And they are not expensive. It will add tons to your ability to create.
