Cairo Paris and London

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 14, 2008, 1:07 PM
Wow, I sure am terrible about updating my journals here. Anyway, here we are. It's April already.

I'm working away on tons of different projects. I've been doing a lot of illustration but some animation work too. I'm finishing up some motion graphics for a commercial which is fun and starting work on an opening for a TV show. Working from home has been great. I miss my friends at Pixar (I left in October to move back to the east coast to be closer to family again) but I really don't miss the work very much at all. I liked working on big films, but my part was so small and technical it's nice to be doing pure creative work once again.

In other news I'm doing some traveling in the near future. I'm off to Cairo in a couple of weeks to visit some friends and do some consulting at a studio there. And then in June I'm off to speak at the Game Developer's Conference in Paris ( [link] ). Let me know if any of you are in that section of the world and plan on attending. I'll be giving 2 talks, one short one and then a longer master class on lighting for film. I might get to go to London too to consult with a client there, so that would be great. Ah... travel... it's so nice to be free to do it again.

Oh.. and I updated my personal webpage too. It's kind of slow, but it get's the job done. Now with a demo reel too. Ooooh!

Until next time!

Interview on CGchannel

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 14, 2008, 7:18 AM
About 4 1/2 months ago, when my DVD with the Gnomon Workshop came out, I got an email from Stephan Dube, one of the editors of CGchannel.com, wanting to do an interview with me about my art, my work at Pixar, and my Gnomon DVD. Well, it's finally up, though slightly outdated since they waited 4 months to put it up (they had some computer problems and lost interview). So alas, here it is. Enjoy!

Thank you all again for all the kind comments and compliments and critiques. I appreciate the feedback!

Huge life changes

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 14, 2007, 7:32 AM
I've had so HUGE life changes recently, so I figured it was time to share it here. Two weeks ago I moved 3000 miles with my family back to the east coast (of the US). It was a huge decision to leave Pixar, but good things are ahead. My reasons are many, but mainly to simplify life and be closer to family again. My 5 year old son needs to be closer than 3000 miles from his grandparents and cousins.

As for my career I've made the leap to full time freelance work. All is great so far. I have a few great clients and many potential jobs. I'm finishing up some effects work on an independent sci-fi film ( [link] ) which has been a blast. Time will tell in the coming months how it all goes. But it's nice to be home again after 15 years of being away (and it's nice to feel the effects of a significantly lower cost of living, San Francisco was insane).

So that's it for me. The Gnomon DVD ( [link] ) is selling well. Have a look at it if you dare. :)

Cheers!

Shameless Promotion

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 18, 2007, 10:32 AM
Well, they day has finally arrived and my DVD has hit the shelves. If you want an in depth look into how I think about light and color and how I paint and light in 3D, go buy a copy of my DVD with the Gnomon Workshop. Yahoo! After more than a year and a half of thinking about it, creating it and letting Gnomon publish it, it's finally here. Have a look...

Monday the 17th

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 11, 2007, 9:28 AM
Ah! It keeps getting pushed back. My Gnomon DVD (titled Practical Color and Light) was set to come out tomorrow (the 12th), but I got an email this morning saying it's been pushed back again until the 17th. Hopefully this will be it and next Monday it will be public.

Not much other news. I'm back doing some more freelance work, so I'll be posting more images soon.

Cheerio!
